RaAM specialised seminar
Metaphor in vitro: from texts to brains
IUSS Pavia will host the 9th Researching and Applying Metaphor
(RaAM) specialised seminar
Two main families of approaches to metaphor exist: text linguistics and corpus studies on the one hand, and experimental investigations on the other. This seminar is intended to show the utility of combining and blending these two approaches. Capitalizing on RaAM’s strong orientation toward applied corpus studies and on the experimental expertise of the NEPLab, the seminar will foster dialog between metaphor research and a number of related disciplines, such as psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, language acquisition, computational linguistics, and Experimental Pragmatics. The event will preserve the diversity of topics that traditionally characterizes RaAM events, while also promoting a wider range of methodological approaches, from behavioral investigations to corpus studies.
The Seminar will take place on June 16-17 and will be preceded on June 15 by four preconference workshops focusing on different methodological approaches to metaphor: Metaphor development (trends and tools), Computational approaches to metaphors, The neurobiology of metaphor, Metaphors in clinical contexts.
The title of the Seminar “Metaphor in vitro. From texts to brains” is meant to evoke the idea that metaphor can be studied experimentally, going from its textual manifestation to the neural activity it generates, with rigorous scientific procedures throughout the different levels of investigation. We thank Gerard Steen for pointing to a nice reference evoked by the chosen title, namely “In vitro conventionalization” as in Experiment 3 of the seminal Bowdle & Gentner (2005) article.
